Research Team
Global Genre Synthesis is a collaborative research initiative dedicated to exploring and synthesizing methodologies in genre-based pedagogy through the lens of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). Our team of five scholars from diverse educational backgrounds brings extensive experience and expertise in language education. Together, we work to bridge research gaps and enhance the integration of genre-based approaches in language teacher education.

Dr. Winfred Xuan
Winfred is a language teacher educator based in Hong Kong, with over a decade of experience advancing language education through Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and genre-based pedagogy. His work centers on second language writing development and bridging theory with practice to enhance language teacher education.
Driven by a passion for empowering educators, Winfred’s contributions extend beyond professional development, making a significant impact in the field of applied linguistics. Through his initiatives, he continues to champion effective teaching methodologies, enriching the learning experiences of both teachers and students.

Dr. Cassi Liardet
Cassi, a senior lecturer at Macquarie University in Sydney, serves as the Deputy Director of Research Training for the Department of Linguistics. With a wealth of experience in applying SFL and genre-based approaches in her teaching, she has made significant contributions to the field, particularly in English as an additional language education and the teaching of grammatical metaphor. Her extensive publications and innovative methodologies enrich our collective knowledge and enhance our research’s impact on language education.

Dr. Harni Kartika-Ningsih
Harni, an Assistant Professor from Indonesia, specializes in genre-based pedagogy with a focus on enhancing literacy teaching and learning. Guided by esteemed scholars Jim Martin, David Rose, and Frances Christie, her research delves into the application of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) concepts within Indonesia’s multilingual educational settings. Harni’s deep understanding of local contexts, combined with her dedication to engaging language teachers and practitioners, enriches our team with valuable perspectives and expertise.

Dr. Akiko Nagao
Dr. Akiko Nagao is an Associate Professor at Ryukoku University, Japan, specializing in L2 academic writing, Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), and the Genre-Based Approach (GBA) in classroom instruction. She completed her PhD under the mentorship of Dr. Cassi Liardét, further deepening her expertise in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) writing. Her research focuses on genre-based pedagogy and effective writing assessment, contributing valuable insights and cutting-edge methodologies to the advancement of research and practice in this field.

Dr. Anne-Coleman Webre
Anne Coleman, a lecturer from Germany, specializes in pre-service language teacher education. Trained at the University of Michigan, she brings a global perspective, bridging educational practices between the US and Germany. Her expertise in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and genre-based pedagogy informs both her teaching and research, ensuring that our project integrates best practices from diverse educational contexts.
